about

By Stacey Knott
Anyone who raps “I’m wicked and everybody else is shit” and releases an album with a statement saying it will be album of the year for 2008, would probably carry a .45, have diamond encrusted grilles and (conversely) a shit album. Except when it’s Wellington pop maestro Vorn.

‘Vorn and the’ is full of warm and cheesy keys, well-layered vocals, splashes of choral singing, super-bad rapping, irony, ridicule, parody and beat-boxing to name but a few of its qualities. And it’s all about quality as just about every track stands on its own feet, with few hanging around as fillers.

Though in the most part sublimely pop-tastic the album delves into most genres this side of happy, including surf, barbershop, rockabilly and plenty of hip hop. Vorn understands that, like with the French language, you can say the most unpleasant things and still make a girl swoon. Case in point, the layered a cappella on Lousy Fag. It sounds beautiful, but the lyrics are anything but. These lyrics contrast well to the hilarity of You Throw Like a Girl and My Songs Are My Children.

As long as no one else releases a Wellington-bedroom-pop album this year, then ‘Vorn and the’ has won this category for album of 2008 in my books.
